What We Do

Train

Training

At Flying Horse Farm we train both flat horses and steeplechasers ( hurdle and timber). All of the horses train over miles of turf gallops with varying degrees of hills. Our conditioning philosophy is based on the belief that a strong base to a horse is key. The fastest horse does not always win, many times it is the one that gets tired last. Our horses build stamina before they are asked to condition at speeds; not only does this create a well rounded horse who will not get tried in his races, it builds a sounder horse who is less likely to have a typical racehorse injuries. This practice of building a strong base in a horse has proved particularly successful for horse’s going into their first race off a long layoff. We foster strong horses who have long careers and/or who stay mentally and physically sound to move on to other things when their racing career is over.

We also believe it is important for horses to have social skills and be able to interact with other horses. Part of out training program offers hours of turn out for all the horses in spacious fields. They are turned out with a buddy or two, if appropriate, while maintaining the safety of each horse as best as possible. This more natural way of life allows for a healthier horse.

Geographically positioned close to Pimlico Race Course, horses ship in to the race track for published works, and gate schooling . Not only does this ease the keenness when put on the van but it also enables the horse to learn to relax while shipping and not always anticipate racing. And since the horses are not stabled at a race track where they are expected to race only at that track, our horses are able to race anywhere they are best suited without penalty. Flying Horse Farm is within two hours of six race tracks and in the heart of Maryland Steeplechasing.

Breaking

Have your horse started in a friendly environment. Our horses are started from the ground up, learning voice commands through long-lining and loungeing before they are backed. Once they are ready for a rider, they are taught the basics of being ridden. They are trained along side an older horse for security and as a role model, as well as with their peers. When they graduate from our program they will be comfortable on their own and with others. They know their lead changes and are well prepared for a life as a racehorse. We prepare them for anything they may encounter in their young lives, from barking dogs to riding through the woods and crossing streams to dealing with vehicle traffic. Our well rounded youngsters will make an easy adjustment to the life as a racehorse, so they can jump into training full speed ahead.

For Sale

For those horses that do not excel as a racehorse, Flying Horses Farm reschools them and offers them for sale as riding horses in a variety of disciplines.  See our sale page for our list of available horses.
